Calculator to find Stopping Sight Distance
01 Jan 24
Use this calculator to find the minimum sight distance available on a road at any spot having sufficient length to enable the driver to stop a vehicle travelling safely without collision or any other obstruction.
The visibility of the road ahead of the driver will help in the safe and efficient operation of the vehicles. It should be highly efficient so that the length of the road is highly visible to the driver even from a distance ahead. This distance is termed the sight distance.

Explanation:
This calculator will help you to stop your vehicle at an appropriate distance, hence avoiding collision.
You just have to enter the speed at which you are driving, and the rest of the things are already there like reaction time which is 2.5 and coefficient of friction which is 0.15.
Usually, the speed is in kmph so you have to multiply it by 0.278 to convert it to m/s and the rest of the work is done by calculator.

Note/ Special Case:
If you’re in a rush, it’s important to be careful when entering speed in kilometers per hour as it can lead to incorrect results. Make sure to follow the steps provided below the calculator as well.

Trying another way of finding out can also be very rewarding. You can try another way of finding out when you are already aware of the lag distance and braking distance.

Also, if you know the braking efficiency of your vehicle then also you can calculate the stopping sight distance.
Please don’t hesitate to continue the discussion on this topic. Keep an eye out for more calculators coming soon!
